Central National Risk Assessment Category 3 Workshop Update


FSC Africa has commenced the process of the Centralised National Risk Assessment (CNRA) in Swaziland with Category 3.

The Centralized National Risk Assessment(CNRA) has been initiated to increase the global coverage and consistency ofFSC risk assessments. These will be used by FSC-certified organizations whichsource FSC Controlled Wood, and will provide the basis for developing moredetailed National Risk Assessments (NRAs) in the future. The first workshop was held in Swaziland on7 -8 September 2016. The topic of Controlled Wood and the results of theinitial assessment of Category 3 – high conservation values was discussed withstakeholders. Participants included FSC Certificate holders, the Ministry ofForestry, The Swaziland National Trust Commission and representatives fromuncertified farms, woodlots and plantations.The role of government in assisting theforest industry was highlighted by stakeholders along with the importance ofsourcing timber from small growers on communal lands. The comments received during the workshopwill be incorporated into draft 2 of the HCV assessment, which will be open topublic consultation in December 2016 – January 2017. FSC International has appointed NEPcon toconduct the Category 1 assessment. NEPCon has great experience in legality assessmentand timber regulations and their local representative will be in contact withStakeholders to assist with the generation of a Draft Assessment report. Thedraft assessment report will be publicised later this year for comment.
