Braam Steenkamp wins Sappi Forests FSC Farmer of the year award
Braam Steenkamp of the Warburton Sawmill and farm in Warburton Mpumalanga, South Africa is the winner of the 2018 Sappi Forests’ Forest Stewardship Council Group Scheme Farmer of the Year award.
Braam, who is a commercial tree farmer said he was proud to win the award. “The FSC certification has brought several advantages to our farm like streamlining how we run our business and being operational efficient. We are producing good quality timber and we have created job opportunity and security for local community.
Sappi Forests General Manager Dietmar Schroeder said the businesses in Sappi’s FSC Group Scheme are exceptional. “I was very impressed with the FSC Group Scheme farmers are clearly achieving new levels of excellence in commercial tree farming,”
According to Sappi’s Group Scheme Manager, Axel Jooste, 42 farmers in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal participate in the scheme and are eligible for the award growers who supply Sappi with timber have an option to join the scheme.
