Furniture

FSC certification can raise a furniture company’s credibility across the supply chain. As consumers are increasingly looking for information on the sustainability of the products they buy, the role of furniture companies in responsible sourcing is becoming even more relevant. The FSC label is therefore a powerful tool that can help furniture companies to communicate their commitment to sustainable forest management.

Consumer demand

Globescan surveyed 10,000 consumers from 13 countries and it found that 80% of surveyed consumers expected companies to ensure that the wooden products they sell are not contributing to deforestation. It also found that 50% of the surveyed consumers recognise the FSC label and they trust FSC to be effective in protecting forests. In addition, the survey also found that the consumer’s respect for companies go up when they partner with a not-for-profit organisation to help solve social issues.

In the 2018 Green Home Furnishings Consumer Study, 92% of the respondents (from a total of 500 respondents), had expressed an interest in buying wood furniture certified as legal and coming from responsibly managed forests.

FSC-certified forests have environmental, economic and social benefits.

As the world’s most trusted sustainable forest management solution, FSC labelling tells customers that the materials used originate from sustainable and legal sources.

FSC Promotional Licence

Many trusted retailers across the globe are FSC promotional licence holders. Retailers who buy finished, FSC-labelled products from an FSC-certified company and sell these on to end users may apply to FSC for a promotional licence to enable them to use the FSC trademarks to promote these products. Similarly, organisations that use FSC-certified products as part of their operations or business, but do not sell them, may apply for a licence to promote FSC.

FSC works in close collaboration with small, medium and large furniture retailers and manufacturers to help them communicate their commitment to FSC certification and increase awareness around sustainable forestry and its benefits. IKEA is one such company and shares the value of FSC in their testimony below:

Ikea

Working with FSC provides us with the most robust system to improve responsible forest management as we are committed to only using wood from more sustainable sources (wood which is FSC certified or recycled) by 2020.
