Sitting in a strategic meeting, he saw a future where sustainability wasn’t just a buzzword but a business necessity. “I’d been watching global trends ethical sourcing, traceable paper, responsible forestry,” Maru recalls. “It wasn’t big here yet, but I knew we had to get ready.”

Back then, Kenyan clients barely mentioned certified paper. Still, leaders like CEO Kalpan Patel and CFO Shreeti Patel didn’t dismiss the idea they nurtured it, waiting for the right moment to act. That moment hit in 2022, when global demand for eco-responsibility became undeniable. English Press dove in, chasing FSC™ Chain of Custody (CoC) certification a badge proving their paper comes from forests managed with care for the environment, communities, and economies.

A journey of commitment

The path wasn’t a sprint. It meant overhauling sourcing, training staff, building systems to track every sheet, and facing a rigorous audit. With expert guidance and leadership’s full backing, English Press partnered with the Soil Association, an FSC-accredited body, in May 2022. After a smooth pre-assessment, they clinched their FSC CoC certificate on October 17, 2022.

“There’s a clear process, plenty of support, and big wins at the end,” Maru says with a grin. Today, sustainability is woven into their company genetic fabric. Both International and local clients now expect FSC-certified paper, often requesting the FSC logo on products to flaunt their green credentials. “What started as a quiet vision is now how we roll,” Maru adds. “Our clients don’t just want it they demand it.”

A ripple in Kenya’s green wave

English Press isn’t alone. By September 30, 2025, Kenyan companies held 22 CoC certificates, from timber to furniture to packaging, showing sustainability is no longer a niche. “English Press proves what’s possible with vision and timing,” says Annah Agasha, FSC Africa’s Deputy Director. “They didn’t wait for pressure; they acted. And they’re stronger for it.”

The rewards? New global markets, sharper operations, prouder teams, and a brand that shines. “We’ve grown our client base, streamlined our systems, and built a business ready for tomorrow,” Maru shares. His advice to others? “Don’t overthink it, just leap.”
