FSC will co-lead Session 10: Driving Market Access Through Responsible Sourcing: Voluntary Sustainability Standards as Pathways to Green Growth with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
This session explores how sustainable trade in Africa can be advanced through Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), Chain of Custody (CoC) certification, and broader Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS).
With rising global demand for responsibly sourced forest products and tropical commodities, embedding high standards in trade agreements and export-promotion instruments creates opportunities for green growth. VSS can reduce regulatory risks, support compliance with mechanisms such as the EU Deforestation Regulation, and provide long-term, inclusive benefits for producers and markets.
Panelists will examine how trade agreements and government support can help offset the costs of certification for farmers and smallholders, ensuring that sustainability compliance translates into market access, commercial advantage, and resilient livelihoods. Practical examples will illustrate how certification programs contribute to economic development, competitiveness, and policy coherence in an evolving regulatory environment.
Speakers from RSPO, FSC, producer organizations, and government will highlight Africa-specific trends, policy incentives, and implementation experiences. Participants will engage in an interactive discussion on scaling certified trade, leveraging climate finance, and aligning public and private actions to expand VSS adoption. The session aims to generate actionable insights and commitments linking sustainability standards, trade policy, and economic growth.
