This was a collective call to action, blending sustainable goals with economic aspirations, and demonstrating how Rwanda's forestry sector can thrive and lead on the global stage.
Envisioning a sustainable future for Rwanda's forests In his opening address, Dr. Concorde Nsengumuremyi, Director General of the Rwanda Forestry Authority, emphasized the critical role of forests in national development. He highlighted the strides made with the Ultimate Forests Company Limited (UFCL) in obtaining FSC certification as a testament to Rwanda's commitment to responsible forestry.
Dr. Nsengumuremyi emphasized FSC certification as a tool to elevate Rwanda's forest products in international markets. He called for collaboration amongst financial institutions, academia, and government agencies to achieve this vision. Jean Rindiro, CEO of UFCL, echoed this sentiment, describing how FSC certification aligns with the company's mission of environmental stewardship. With over 10,000 hectares certified around the Nyungwe Buffer Zone, UFCL has set a new standard for the industry, demonstrating the synergy between profitability and sustainability.
A blueprint for collaboration
Throughout the forum, collaboration emerged as a key theme. Financial institutions like the Rwanda Development Bank (RDB) and the Rwanda Social Security Fund (RSSF) underscored their support for sustainable forestry, offering insights into how such partnerships shape the future of Rwanda's forests. Rubis Ruti Kanangire of RDB articulated the bank's commitment to aligning economic ambitions with environmental resilience. Rindiro expressed gratitude for RDB's funding, which was instrumental in scaling UFCL's certified operations. An RSSF representative added that investing in FSC-certified forestry contributes to creating jobs, sustaining communities, and realizing Rwanda's Vision 2050.
The power of FSC Standards
Dr. Alphonse Munyankindi of the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) highlighted the importance of stringent standards in enabling Rwanda's forest products to compete globally. By aligning with FSC and RSB standards, Rwanda's forestry sector positions itself as a guardian of biodiversity and a defender against climate change.
Mrs. Annah Agasha, FSC Coordinator for Eastern Africa, reaffirmed FSC's commitment to environmental protection. She emphasized that FSC's rigorous standards are designed to protect the natural forests that communities depend on.
Toward a new era of sustainable growth
The forum concluded with a call to action from Thierry Mucyo, Executive Advisor at RSSF. He stressed the importance of collective action to transform Rwanda's forestry sector, emphasizing the need to raise awareness, build stronger supply chains, and create a thriving market for certified wood products.
