Every year, FSC Forest Week brings together communities around the globe to celebrate sustainable forestry and drive action against climate change. In Eastern Africa, this year’s theme, “Small Steps, Big Change,” came to life with a vibrant series of events aimed at fostering collaboration, education, and advocacy. With a focus on youth empowerment, community engagement, and the promise of a sustainable future, FSC Eastern Africa’s Forest Week 2024 was a testament to the power of collective action.
On 23rd September 2024, the week began with a spirited showcase of young climate leaders at the YMCA Alliance Climate Games in Nairobi. Thirty-six dynamic young people from Gambia, Kenya, Namibia, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe gathered to participate in a climate-focused boot-camp organized by ThinkPlace Kenya, a global design and innovation studio based in Nairobi.
The participants, passionate about change, explored tools such as design thinking to create game-based learning tools aimed at raising climate awareness among their peers. These young innovators expect their games to reach and inspire over 12,000 at-risk youth across Africa.
FSC Eastern Africa's Marketing and Communications Specialist, Frida Salim, attended the event to represent the organization. She highlighted the significance of youth-driven initiatives in fostering environmental resilience. "The future of our forests lies in their hands," she said, addressing the young participants. Frida also shared FSC's commitment to empowering youth to drive positive change for the future of forests and the planet.
In Kenya, Little Stewards echo their voices
FSC's commitment to climate action extends to even the youngest environmentalists. During Forest Week on September 26th and 27th, 2024, students from Millfield Runda School and Colors & Crayons Early Learning Centre joined the FSC Little Stewards programme, which encouraged children to explore the wonders of forests through hands-on activities. These young stewards showcased their creativity in a lively climate musical, performing songs, dances, and skits that celebrated the beauty and importance of forests. Through their energetic performances, they highlighted the role of forests in sustaining life and inspired their audience with a message of conservation.
In addition, the Little Stewards launched their own podcast to share their stories, experiences, and projects. This platform will not only amplify their voices but also foster a sense of community, encouraging collaboration and shared learning among the young conservationists. By participating in the podcast, the children can enhance their communication skills and inspire other young people to engage in conservation efforts. This reinforces the message that even the youngest members of society can play a significant role in fostering environmental awareness and advocacy.
The FSC Little Stewards Club was launched in 2022 by FSC Eastern Africa in collaboration with the Colors & Crayons Early Learning Centre of Nairobi. Starting with 80 students, the club has now grown to approximately 160 young environmental enthusiasts. It educates children about the importance of forests and sustainability through a variety of interactive activities, including forest excursions, tree-planting events, and creative workshops focused on nature conservation.
This year’s Forest Week celebration allowed the Little Stewards to express their passion for the environment, highlighting the potential of youth as ambassadors for nature. "Through the eyes of these Little Stewards, we see the limitless potential for a greener future,” said Frida Salim, FSC Eastern Africa’s Marketing and Communications Specialist. Their enthusiasm and creativity demonstrated that the future of our forests is bright when young people are inspired to take action.
Engaging the public procurement debate in Kampala, Uganda
The FSC Forest Week wasn’t just about inspiring youth; it was also an opportunity to foster systemic change within key sectors. On 24th September 2024, FSC Eastern Africa collaborated with Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MFPED) to host a sustainable public procurement workshop in Kampala.
This event brought together over 30 policymakers, businesses, and NGOs to explore how sourcing FSC-certified products can positively impact both the environment and the economy. Through discussions on responsible procurement practices, attendees reinforced the vital connection between sustainability and economic resilience. Led by FSC Eastern Africa Coordinator, Annah Agasha, the workshop said, “every FSC-certified product procured represents a commitment to a greener future.” It served as a powerful reminder that informed choices at the policy level can pave the way for meaningful change in sustainable practices across the region.
Honouring sustainability champions
On September 20, 2024, FSC Eastern Africa hosted an online showcase to highlight the critical role of sustainable sourcing in business. The event featured inspiring videos from FSC certificate holders, including the New Forests Company (NFC).
NFC shared their journey towards responsible timber production in Uganda and Tanzania, demonstrating how businesses can implement best practices to protect ecosystems and uplift local communities.
“FSC certificate holders like NFC are leading the way in responsible sourcing in Eastern Africa,” said Frida Salim. “This showcase empowers these companies to continue advancing environmental stewardship and inspire others to follow suit.”
By sharing their experiences and best practices, NFC and other participating companies are inspiring businesses across the region to embrace sustainability and create a positive impact on the planet.

Young forestry professionals dialogue in Bomet, Kenya
The week concluded on 26th September 2024 with the young forestry professionals dialogue workshop in Bomet County, Kenya. The meeting brought together aspiring forestry professionals and experienced mentors as part of the Forestry Society of Kenya’s National Dialogue Conference.
Workshops and panel discussions gave participants insights into novice and innovative practices, including the use of digital tools for better forest management. The dialogue provided invaluable networking opportunities and encourage young leaders to connect with industry veterans like Dr. Nyambati from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), who shared insights on career development and the future of sustainable forestry in Kenya.
This final gathering was also part of the FSC Forest Week in Eastern Africa. It inspired and equipped the next generation of forestry professionals with essential knowledge on sustainable management of our natural resources.
Small steps, big change
FSC Forest Week 2024 in Eastern Africa was a celebration of hope, action, and progress. It showcased the power of young climate advocates and little stewards, whose bold ideas and curious minds are driving a sustainable future. From policymakers to business leaders, everyone came together to demonstrate that collective efforts, no matter how small, can lead to significant change.
As Grace Otiende, a passionate young participant in Kenya's FSC Forest Week, aptly stated, "We are the guardians of tomorrow's forests, and it's up to us to ensure they thrive." This year's Forest Week in Eastern Africa demonstrated the power of unity, proving that together, we can achieve extraordinary things for our forests and planet.
