We created a user-friendly, fun and factual Grade 6 Learner Activity Book to encourage learners  (11 -12 year olds) to become "friends of the forest" - people who look after and use forests in a responsible way. The workbook is aligned to the South African  School Curriculum, and provided key messages on the forests in South Africa, its important role for the environment and the products that can be responsibly sourced from these forests.

At the end of the workbook they are asked to sign a  Forest Friend pledge , based on the acronym TREES to:

T – Teach others about the importance of forests

R – Recycle paper, cardboard,  plastic and glass, and to re-use wood products

E – Encourage people not to litter and to keep the environment clean

E – Enjoy everything the forests have to offer without damaging them

S – Support companies that look after our forests.

FSC and Mondi shared the costs in developing and printing the booklet, NGO Pick ‘n Pay School Club (founded and funded by Pick ‘n Pay) managed the project  and handled the distribution to 30 schools in KwaZulu-Natal in the close vicinity to Mondi’s Merebank Mill, south of Durban. This was done in the week before International Day of Forests.

The booklet was printed by FSC COC certificate holder Tandym Printers.
