   The bigger picture

With the implementation of the FSC Remedy Framework and two associated policies, FSC envisages a future in which:

  • There will be no certification of converted lands after 2020, including natural forests and High Conservation Value areas
  • Social and environmental remedy will be required for certification of lands converted between 1994-2020
  • Social and environmental harms caused by unacceptable activities will require remedy before association with FSC is possible, in line with the FSC Remedy Framework
  • The requirements to avoid FSC’s defined unacceptable activities and to remedy their harm will apply to more organizations within corporate groups

Looking back

Over the past 10 years, FSC has worked diligently alongside stakeholders and members to develop a robust, holistic and transparent approach to addressing past conversion and the remediation of harms, both environmental and social, that affect the well-being of the world’s forests and forest communities. As a result, FSC is now in the process of finalizing three critical normative documents that will guide how FSC addresses social and environmental harms resulting from past conversion, as well as other activities considered to be unacceptable according to the FSC Policy for Association. They are:

  1. FSC Remedy Framework
  2. FSC Policy for Association
  3. FSC Policy to Address Conversion

The FSC Remedy Framework defines the mechanisms FSC will use to address forest conversion and other violations of FSC’s Policy for Association. It brings together the provisions of FSC’s previous drafts of the Conversion Remedy Procedure and Policy for Association Remediation Framework, which were developed in parallel, in 2021.
