Developing the Tanzania national forest stewardship standard

The processes of developing the standards was started in 2006, with WWF Tanzania as the primary supporter with additional financial support provided by the FAO FLEGT programme in 2010, and Kilombero Valley Teak Company, New Forest Company Limited and Green Resources Tanzania. Technical support was provided by FSC International and its regional office in Africa.

About Tanzanian forests

Tanzania has a total forest cover of 48.1 million hectares, equivalent to 55 per cent of the total land area of Tanzania mainland. Production forests cover 20 million ha or 22 per cent of all forests. 34.5 per cent of total forest area classified as forests are owned by the central government; 6.5 per cent as forests are owned by the local government authorities; 45.7 per cent as forests are owned by village governments; while 7.3% of forests are owned by small, private owners.
