With great fun and curiosity, the preschoolers learned about the importance of reforestation for the maintenance of ecosystems under the theme of "Forests and health." Ms Frida Salim, Communication and Marketing Specialist, Eastern Africa presented FSC at the event.

The celebration began with an interactive session where the little stewards learned how to identify the FSC label on everyday product and the importance of purchasing FSC certified goods. This included light talks where the young forest stewards learned about the benefits of forests to humans and wildlife, including clean air, water, and shelter for different species. The talks also highlighted the value of FSC standards which ensures that forests are managed in an environmentally and socially responsible way. What makes FSC's forest management standards unique is its protection of water quality, prohibition of harvesting rare old growth forest, prevention of loss of natural forest cover and prohibition of highly hazardous chemicals.

Following the tour of the center, the young stewards identified the tree species they planted in September 2022 and discussed how care is being provided to each tree. The young students enjoyed the activity and were excited to see how their trees had grown.

"Colors & Crayons Early Learning Centre strongly believes that environmental education is an important component of a holistic education and takes a whole-school approach to environmental care," said Curriculum Coordinator Ms Grace Otiende.

Colors and Crayons Early Learning Centre and FSC started the Little Forest Stewards Club to educate children about caring for the environment through engaging activities. The initiative tries to promote environmental improvement via tree planting, recycling, and educating children and their peers about environmental protection.

Overall, the celebration was fantastic, and the organizers were thrilled to see such enthusiastic, engaged children. Colors & Crayons Early Learning Centre will continue working with FSC to promote sustainable forest management practices in schools and in communities. They hope this experience will inspire young stewards to become forest ambassadors in the future.
