The government agency was established in 1996 and is mandated to ensure sustainable management of wildlife resources both in Uganda both within and outside the protected areas.

Need for FSC Certification

"We are striving to be a leading wildlife conservation agency that will make Uganda one of the best ecotourism destinations in Africa. Our plan is to obtain FSC certification for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a World Heritage Site and which is home to more than half of all mountain gorillas on Earth, as well as Kibale National Park, the primate capital; and Rwenzori mountains national park which is both a World heritage site and RAMSAR site.” said Richard Kapere, UWA Planning Manager.

“We believe FSC certification will further strengthen our respect and trust as a conservation institution of Government, Increase the value of our tourism products and services which are nature-based, and increase the portfolio for tourism marketing and promotion to attract more tourists,” added Kapere.
